Sick Building Syndrome
Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a situation in which occupants of a building experience acute health effects that can seem to be linked to time in the building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building.
Symptoms:
- Building occupants compain of headaches
- eye, nose and throat irritation
- dry throat
- dry or itchy skin
- dizziness or nausea
- difficulty concentrating
- fatigue
- sensitivity to odours
Causes:
- contaminated ductwork/HVAC units
- chemical contaminants from indoor sources
- chemical contaminants from outdoor sources
- biological contaminants
- inadequate ventilation
Solutions:
- duct cleaning
- increase ventilation rates
- air cleaning
- remove or modify the source of the pollutant
- education of occupants
